Durham Constabulary has launched a major manhunt for a 19-year-old following a fatal incident at a petrol station in Seaham. A man in his 20s died after being struck by a car on the forecourt of an Esso garage.
Seven Arrested in Connection with Fatal Incident
The tragic event occurred at around 4.50pm on January 15 on Stockton Road. As part of the subsequent murder investigation, officers have made seven arrests. Three male teenagers and a man in his 50s have been detained on suspicion of murder.
Additionally, three women—one teenager and two in their 40s—have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender. All seven individuals remain in police custody as inquiries continue.
Urgent Search for Key Witness
Police are urgently seeking Ashton Anderson, aged 19, who they believe holds vital information about the circumstances leading to the man's death. He is described as being around 5ft 10 inches tall, of slim build, and with short brown hair.
A police cordon was maintained at the Esso garage throughout the day following the incident. Durham Constabulary has stated there will be a heightened police presence in the Seaham area while the investigation progresses.
Police Appeal for Information and Reassure Public
Detective Chief Inspector Chris Woollett addressed the community, saying: "I'd like to thank the community of Seaham for their support while our officers have been carrying out their inquiries since Thursday evening."
"An increased police presence will remain at a number of locations in and around the area while the investigation continues, but I'd also like to reassure people that we have no information to suggest any wider risk to the public," DCI Woollett added.
He issued a stern warning: "Anybody found to be assisting or concealing suspects, however, will face robust action." The detective concluded by stating that the force's thoughts remain with the family and friends of the victim.
Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding Ashton Anderson's whereabouts or details about the hit-and-run to contact Durham Constabulary immediately.
