Italian police on the island of Stromboli stopped a party attended by Mick Jagger because music is banned on Wednesdays. The Rolling Stones frontman, 82, was celebrating the completion of filming for Three Incestuous Sisters, a film by Italian director Alice Rohrwacher in which he stars.
The party took place at a local venue on Wednesday night, with other stars including Josh O'Connor, Jessie Buckley, Saoirse Ronan, Dakota Johnson and Isabella Rossellini. Police attended and asked them to stop the music due to a Wednesday music ban enacted by the mayor. According to Italian press reports, the music was played from a small speaker at an acceptable volume, causing confusion and hilarity, but partygoers reluctantly complied.
La Repubblica reported that a local bookseller revealed the incident on social media, saying the party was stopped shortly before midnight after some residents complained to police. The film crew and actors left Stromboli on Thursday, with Jagger and Josh O'Connor's father departing in a private helicopter.
Riccardo Gullo, mayor of Lipari, which administers Stromboli, could not be reached for comment. Rosa Oliva, president of the Pro Loco Amo Stromboli association, criticised the intervention, calling it "yet another sign" the island was being "penalised in its moments of visibility" rather than supported, especially after a winter of shortages. She said the mayor should have welcomed the guests for their contribution to the local economy.
Jagger, who owns a home in Sicily, arrived in Stromboli a few days earlier and was welcomed "with the usual island discretion", according to SkyTG24. The film is based on Audrey Niffenegger's novel of the same name.
