The dismembered remains of a missing Belgian tourist have been uncovered at a landfill site on the Spanish island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. Spain's Civil Guard located the body of 56-year-old Katty Oosterlinck on Friday morning, following her disappearance earlier this week.
Discovery at Zurita Landfill
Investigators found her remains at the Zurita rubbish dump in Puerto del Rosario. Ms Oosterlinck had been reported missing on May 4 after relatives and friends lost contact with her. Spanish authorities launched a search operation and are now probing the circumstances of her death.
Officers had been deployed to the area since Thursday. However, the authorities have not yet disclosed the cause of death or the events surrounding it. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to take place after her remains are removed from the landfill site, while investigators analyse evidence.
Investigation Details
Sources told Spanish media that the Civil Guard had requested Fuerteventura Island Council to collaborate by granting access to the landfill, as officers believed clues could be found there. The authorities confirmed that the discovery on Friday is linked to the missing Belgian tourist.
Ms Oosterlinck was last seen in Corralejo, a town on the northeast coast of Fuerteventura, approximately 30 miles from the landfill site where her corpse was found. Her death has sent shockwaves through the island's large expatriate community.
