Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of Zimbabwe's late former president Robert Mugabe, has been detained by South African police following a shooting incident at his Johannesburg residence. The national broadcaster SABC reported that Mugabe was taken into custody for questioning alongside another man after police responded to the scene.
Critical Condition Following Domestic Incident
South African police confirmed that an employee at the upscale Johannesburg property was shot and remains in critical condition. Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi stated that authorities are investigating a case of attempted murder, though the motive behind the shooting remains unclear at this preliminary stage.
"The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage and police investigations are underway," Colonel Nevhuhulwi emphasized in an official statement.
Family History of Legal Troubles
This incident adds to the legal difficulties faced by members of the Mugabe family in recent years. Bellarmine's older brother, Robert Mugabe Jr, was fined $300 last year after admitting to marijuana possession in Zimbabwe. Their mother, Grace Mugabe, has faced her own legal challenges in South Africa.
In 2017, Grace Mugabe was accused of assaulting model Gabriella Engels at a luxury Johannesburg hotel in the presence of her sons. Although initially granted diplomatic immunity as Zimbabwe's first lady, that protection was overturned by a South African court this year after Engels challenged the decision.
Grace Mugabe has consistently denied the assault allegations, claiming instead that an "intoxicated and unhinged" Engels attacked her first with a knife. Representatives for Engels have dismissed this version of events as false.

Robert Mugabe, who led Zimbabwe for 37 years before being deposed in a 2017 coup, died in Singapore in 2019 at age 95. His second wife, Grace Mugabe, had been positioning herself to succeed him as Zimbabwe's next president prior to the coup that ended his nearly four-decade rule.
Since her husband's removal from power, Grace Mugabe has largely retreated from public life. The detention of her youngest son in South Africa represents another chapter in the complex legal and political saga surrounding the Mugabe family, whose influence once dominated Zimbabwean politics but now faces increasing scrutiny both at home and abroad.
