Oakland Bar Shooting Claims Lives of Beloved Teacher and Devoted Father

A tragic mass shooting at a popular Oakland bar has left two people dead and five others injured, sending shockwaves through the local community. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning at EZ's Lounge, a hip-hop nightclub in Oakland, California.

Victims Identified as Educator and Young Father

Police have identified the two fatalities as Latetia Bobo, a 33-year-old teacher, and Markise Martin, a 25-year-old father. Bobo was an artist and educator who taught eighth-grade English language arts at Caliber public schools. The school district released a heartfelt statement describing her as a "special part of our community, deeply cherished by her students, their families, and her colleagues."

"She was an incredible educator and an even more incredible human being who truly valued relationships and community," the statement continued. "Her presence brought unmistakeable light to our campus, and she will be deeply missed by all of us."

Martin's family has set up a GoFundMe page to honor his memory, describing him as a "loving son, a devoted father to his one-year-old daughter, and a kind, protective brother." They noted that "he was always there for his family when needed, offering support and love without hesitation. His presence brought comfort and strength to those around him."

Chaotic Scene at EZ's Lounge

The shooting took place just after 3:30 a.m., causing panic among the crowd. A local tattoo artist named Kuzi told KTVU that "I didn't even hear the gun shots, I just heard like 100 people running. There were a lot of people crying, screaming, the whole street was blocked off."

Oakland police officers responded to the scene and found seven people injured by gunfire. Bobo died at the scene, while Martin succumbed to his injuries at the hospital later that morning. The five other victims are reported to be in stable condition.

Officers detained multiple individuals at the scene and recovered several firearms. The Oakland Police Department's homicide division is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Police have not yet released information about what led to the shooting.

Community Outpouring of Grief and Anger

The violence has sparked an outpouring of grief from friends, family, and parents of Bobo's current and former students. Robin DeGracia, who had two children taught by Bobo, told CBS San Francisco: "I'm angry. Not that anyone ever deserves it, but she definitely didn't deserve it. She was just talking about her fiance, and now she's gone."

Oakland City Council member Carroll Fife lamented the recent violence in a video shared on social media, stating: "It's tragic. Oakland deserves to have venues where people don't have to worry whether they're going to come home or not."

Context of Oakland's Crime Statistics

This shooting comes despite Oakland reporting its lowest homicide rate in nearly 50 years in 2025. With 67 homicides reported that year, the city saw a 22% decrease from 2024. Oakland leaders have credited violence prevention strategies such as Operation Ceasefire, which collaborates with law enforcement and community organizations to identify individuals at high risk of gun violence and offer them social services and support.

The community now mourns the loss of two vibrant lives while authorities continue their investigation into this senseless act of violence.
