An 18-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a mass shooting at a lakeside party in Oklahoma that left one woman dead and 22 others injured, police said on Wednesday.
The suspect, Jaylan A Davis, was taken into custody on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, which is expected to be upgraded to felony murder following the death of 18-year-old Avianna Smith-Gray. The shooting occurred on Sunday night at Arcadia Lake in Edmond, a suburb of Oklahoma City.
Edmond Police Chief JD Younger said Davis turned himself in after a warrant was issued. He is being held on a $1m bond. Police believe multiple people fired weapons, with more than 80 rounds discharged, and are searching for at least one more suspect.
The party, promoted on social media, drew a large crowd of mostly young adults. The incident began with an argument between two women and escalated into an altercation between rival gang members, according to police. Officers were responding to a noise complaint when the shooting broke out.
Six of the wounded are juveniles, some as young as 15. Chief Younger said, 'We’re trying to find justice for 23 people that were shot, one that’s deceased.' He urged against demonising those involved, noting the complexity of the event.
