Major Search for Missing Scottish Fisherman After Boat Found Aground
Search for missing fisherman Ben Dowie enters ninth day

A major search and rescue operation is continuing for a Scottish fisherman who vanished just days before Christmas.

Desperate Search Operation Launched

Ben Dowie, a 28-year-old from Carnoustie, Angus, has been missing since Saturday, 20 December 2025. The alarm was raised after his creel fishing boat, the Sea Eagle AH18, was discovered run aground on Inverbervie Beach in Aberdeenshire with its engine still running. The vessel was unmanned.

Mr Dowie was known to fish for lobster out of Arbroath. The discovery of his empty boat triggered an immediate and extensive multi-agency response.

Coast-Wide Rescue Effort Mobilised

Police Scotland coordinated a large-scale search involving multiple aircraft, including a search and rescue helicopter. Coastguard rescue teams from Montrose, Stonehaven, Arbroath, and Aberdeen were swiftly deployed to the scene.

They were joined by RNLI lifeboat crews from Arbroath, Montrose, and Stonehaven, as well as numerous local fishing vessels who aided in scouring the coastal waters. The search focused on the area around Lunan Bay and the surrounding coastline.

After nine days, the intensive physical searches of the area have been stood down, though the missing person investigation remains very much active.

Community Tributes and Ongoing Enquiries

Tributes have poured in from the local community, describing Ben as a "true gent" and a "lovely boy." Friends and acquaintances have shared their shock and sadness on social media.

A spokesperson for Arbroath RNLI stated: "Unfortunately at this time the casualty has not been located and our thoughts go out to family, friends, the local fishing community and all involved. We fly our flag at half mast for the respect of our local fishing community at these sad and difficult times."

Police Scotland confirmed that enquiries are ongoing. A spokesperson said: "Officers are continuing to carry out enquiries and the missing person remains outstanding." The force had been called to the beach at around 11.10am on 20 December after the unoccupied boat was reported.
