A 42-year-old man from Newport was arrested on suspicion of burglary after police officers pinned him down in a Morrisons supermarket early on Wednesday, June 24. The arrest came during an operation targeting a series of break-ins at the store on Orb Drive in Lliswerry.
Police Respond to Early Morning Break-In
At approximately 3:15am, officers heard banging and glass shattering at the store. They rushed inside and apprehended a man seen in the alcohol aisle. The suspect remains in police custody.
Ongoing Partnership with Morrisons
Newport's neighbouring policing team had been working closely with Morrisons' management following a spate of burglaries at the Lliswerry branch. Inspector Roland Giles stated: "Officers make use of an array of tactics to identify suspects and then detain them. Every bit of information helps inform operations like last night's."
Giles emphasized the importance of collaboration: "Partnership working is essential, and we've been working closely with stores across Newport to first offer crime prevention advice, strengthen security and, at times when we have received reports of break-ins, respond robustly to make arrests."
Community Engagement
Inspector Giles encouraged the public to report concerns: "If you have any concerns about burglary or theft offences in your area, then please take the time to talk to our officers."
