An 18-year-old Brisbane man has been charged with public nuisance after a viral social media trend known as a 'Scientology speedrun' escalated into chaotic scenes involving a police car.
Court Appearance
Zeppelin Witheridge appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday, charged over the incident that took place on 9 May outside the Church of Scientology in Brisbane's central business district. The teenager is accused of riding his BMX bike over the bonnet of a police car, an act that was filmed and widely shared online.
The 'Scientology Speedrun' Trend
The trend, which originated in Los Angeles and has since spread to cities including London, Edinburgh, New York and Vancouver, involves participants racing into Scientology buildings to see how far they can get before being stopped by security. The term 'speedrun' is borrowed from video gaming, where players aim to complete a level as quickly as possible.
On the day in question, approximately 200 people gathered outside the Brisbane church for a speedrun. After finding the front door locked, the crowd's attention turned to police officers who had arrived at the scene. Witheridge, a member of the Brisbane-based freestyle BMX group Ween Crew, allegedly launched his bike onto and over the bonnet of a patrol car while onlookers cheered and filmed.
Charges
Witheridge has been charged with public nuisance, driving a particular vehicle without due care, and failure to wear a helmet while riding a bike. He appeared in court with his mother, and the matter was adjourned until 24 June.
The Church of Scientology has condemned the speedrun trend as 'organised trespass' and harassment, claiming it has caused damage and minor injuries to staff. Some centres have removed exterior door handles in an attempt to deter participants.
