A 19-year-old man who died after being struck by a car on the M66 following a police pursuit has been identified as Kade Hughes. The incident occurred near Simister Island on Sunday night, November 16.
Police believe Hughes was a pedestrian hit by a vehicle travelling southbound on the M66 at around 9.40pm. He may have been in a car previously involved in a pursuit with Greater Manchester Police officers.
A blue BMW X3 was initially spotted driving at speed on Bury Old Road and went through a red light, prompting a police pursuit. Officers lost sight of the vehicle and later found it abandoned on the Junction 18 roundabout of the M60, having collided with another car. The BMW's passengers fled on foot along the motorway, leading to a collision with a Tesla, which resulted in Hughes' death.
Footage emerged of a group, believed to be Hughes' friends, setting off fireworks and flares at the crash site on Monday evening. The group let off the explosives on a verge next to the busy motorway during rush-hour, causing some vehicles to stop.
Referrals have been made to GMP's Professional Standards Directorate and the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Detective Constable Ian Lawton said: 'Officers initiated a pursuit in accordance with policy... The subsequent collision and tragic fatal injuries are now part of an independent review with the IOPC.'
