New Mexico authorities have confirmed that three individuals are dead and more than a dozen first responders are receiving medical treatment after being exposed to an unidentified substance while responding to a suspected drug overdose at a residence east of Albuquerque.
Incident Details
According to the New Mexico State Police, emergency services were called to a home in Mountainair, a rural community east of Albuquerque, on Wednesday following reports of a suspected drug overdose. Upon arrival, first responders discovered four people unresponsive inside the property. Three of these individuals have since been pronounced dead, while the fourth is receiving treatment at a hospital in Albuquerque.
During the response, 18 first responders were exposed to the unknown substance and began exhibiting symptoms such as nausea and dizziness. All affected personnel were transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where they have been quarantined and are under medical observation. Two of the first responders are reported to be in serious condition, according to Officer Wilson Silver of the New Mexico State Police.
Investigation and Public Safety
Albuquerque Fire Rescue Hazmat teams are currently assisting at the scene in Mountainair to identify the substance involved. Officer Silver stated, “At this time, investigators believe the substance may be transmitted through contact and do not believe it to be airborne.”
Local officials in Mountainair have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat, and a secure perimeter has been established around the affected home. The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine the nature of the substance and prevent further incidents.
