Wife Killer Dies in Prison at HMP Buckley Hall

Russell Trelore, a man convicted of murdering his wife, died while serving a life sentence at HMP Buckley Hall in Rochdale. The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman published a report on his death, which occurred in May 2025.

Murder and Sentence

Trelore was sentenced in May 2011 to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 16 years for the murder of his wife, Sara Trelore, aged 44. She was found with 19 stab wounds at their home in Barrow, Cumbria, in November 2010 and died at the scene. He pleaded guilty at Preston Crown Court.

Death and Investigation

Trelore died in hospital on 27 May 2025 from pulmonary thromboembolism, with fatty liver disease also contributing to his death. He was 64 years old. The Ombudsman's report noted that an independent clinical reviewer concluded the clinical care he received at Buckley Hall was of a good standard and equivalent to community care. It stated: "Although Mr Trelore had limited contact with healthcare staff during his time at Buckley Hall, he was consistently seen in a timely manner when required, and his healthcare needs were appropriately met." The report found no non-clinical issues of concern and made no recommendations. A subsequent inquest concluded he died from natural causes.
