Former police officer Christopher Cave has been sentenced to 21 months in prison after admitting to a sexual relationship with a crime victim while serving as a police officer. The relationship began in 2004 while Cave was employed by Nottinghamshire Police and lasted approximately seven years, ending in early 2011.
Abuse of Trust
Police described the relationship as a 'blatant abuse of trust,' with Cave's conduct 'falling well below the standard expected' of officers. Cave, from Formby, later joined South Yorkshire Police, where the allegations came to light in 2022. He was arrested and suspended from his position as an evidence review officer in June 2022. Prior to that role, he had worked as a police officer with South Yorkshire Police between 2010 and 2017.
Resignation and Sentencing
Cave resigned from South Yorkshire Police in December 2023. On Monday, June 29, he was jailed for one year and nine months at Sheffield Crown Court after pleading guilty to two counts of misconduct in a public office. Following the criminal proceedings, an internal misconduct hearing will be held.
Police Response
Detective Constable Nicola Milner, who led the investigation, stated: 'Cave crudely and blatantly abused the trust placed in him as a police officer and the victim in this case remains at the forefront of our minds. His conduct fell well below the standard that is expected of our officers and we welcome the result of the sentencing in court.'
