Rachel Alexander, a 54-year-old former prosecutor turned conservative commentator, is confronting serious legal challenges after being charged with multiple counts of extreme driving under the influence. The incident occurred on December 21 in Scottsdale, Arizona, where Alexander was arrested following a report from a concerned driver.
Arrest Details and Intoxication Evidence
According to an arrest report cited by the Arizona Republic, Alexander was allegedly so intoxicated that she could not correctly identify Maricopa County Sheriff Jerry Sheridan. Instead, she repeatedly asked for "Sherry Jeridan" and was described by police as incoherent and unable to articulate her questions clearly.
Scottsdale police stopped Alexander after a 911 call reported a blue Mustang swerving erratically and running a red light. Officers noted that she admitted to drinking wine, with purple stains visible on her lips, and her blood alcohol level was measured at 0.230 percent—approximately three times Arizona's legal limit.
Behavior During the Stop
Law enforcement described Alexander as argumentative, stuporous, and incoherent during the interaction. She struggled to exit her vehicle, slurred her speech, and had difficulty maintaining balance. Alexander also referenced her past role as a prosecutor, mentioning that she did not enjoy field sobriety tests due to her professional background.
At one point, she claimed to have a leg disability but later appeared to forget this assertion, denying any medical conditions during booking. Police reported that she attempted to walk away when asked to take a breathalyzer test, insisting, "I am not drunk."
Background and Career
Alexander previously served as a Maricopa County deputy attorney from 2005 to 2010 and as an assistant attorney general for the Arizona Attorney General's office between May 2000 and 2003. She has since transitioned to a career as a political commentator and freelance writer, amassing over 138,000 followers on X.
She founded the Intellectual Conservative news journal, which aims to rebuild a Reagan-era coalition, and writes for Four G Media, a conservative platform focused on God, Gas, Guns, and Glory. Alexander frequently refers to herself as a "recovering Maricopa County Elections attorney and prosecutor" in her social media posts.
Social Media Activity and Response
On the night of her arrest, Alexander attended a Christmas party with Arizona Republicans, sharing a selfie on X with Senate President Warren Petersen and calling it the "best Christmas party in Arizona tonight." She has continued posting on social media since the incident, including comments criticizing leftist prosecutors and alleging funding from George Soros.
In an email to the Arizona Republic, Alexander stated she would "always accept responsibility for my actions" but emphasized that "no one is guilty until convicted in a court of law." She also accused the left of ruining lives through lawfare and called for accountability for societal destruction.
Legal Charges and Proceedings
Alexander faces two counts of extreme DUI, two counts of DUI, and one count of driving without valid registration. She was cited and released around midnight on December 21, with a criminal complaint filed on December 26. Her next court appearance is scheduled for April 20 for a pre-trial conference, according to Scottsdale court records.
The Daily Mail has reached out to Alexander, the Scottsdale Police Department, the Scottsdale Prosecutor's Office, and the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for further comment on the case.
