Gunman on the Loose After Fourth Sydney Shooting in a Week

A gunman remains at large after a house in St Helens Park, in Sydney's south-west, was sprayed with bullets on Wednesday evening, marking the fourth shooting to hit the city in a week.

Three people were inside the home on Briggs Place when an unknown shooter fired at the property at about 7pm. Witnesses reported seeing a dark-coloured Audi sedan leaving the scene. The shooting damaged the house and a car.

Police have established a crime scene and are urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers. The incident follows a similar attack on Tuesday night in Merrylands, where a family of six were inside a home on Miles Street when it was targeted in a suspected drive-by shooting. A burnt-out Hyundai hatchback was later found in Bass Hill, about 10km away.

NSW Police Acting Superintendent Darren Beeche said the Merrylands shooting was likely gang-related but that the perpetrators probably targeted the wrong house. 'The family in that house I believe had nothing to do with crime, gangs or drugs,' he said. 'These people have bad intelligence and it's usually a cowardly act by a coward in the middle of the night.'

Two other shootings occurred last week: a home in Blacktown was mistakenly targeted on Saturday, with a bullet narrowly missing a five-year-old's head, and a property in Constitution Hill was sprayed with bullets on Thursday, with no injuries reported.
