Naked Tourist Flees Thai Hotel After Alleged Robbery by Sex Workers in Pattaya

A shocking incident unfolded in Pattaya, Thailand, as a tourist was filmed running completely naked through his hotel corridor after allegedly being attacked and robbed by sex workers in the notorious 'Sin City'. The dramatic CCTV footage captured the man's frantic escape, highlighting a disturbing trend of violence against visitors in the popular holiday destination.

Alleged Attack and Immediate Aftermath

The tourist, identified only as a Chinese national, had reportedly taken a transgender woman back to his hotel room in Pattaya. Merely ten minutes later, he was seen on security cameras sprinting down the hallway in a state of undress. He immediately alerted hotel reception, claiming that two women had assaulted him and stolen 10,000 baht (approximately £238.66) along with an iPhone 15 Pro Max from his room.

Police swiftly launched an investigation, tracing one of the suspects to a shared accommodation. On February 26, officers arrested Atikhun Mueangmungkhun, a 20-year-old transgender woman, who was found alongside four other women. Initially denying involvement, Atikhun later confessed when confronted with clear security footage showing her face at the scene.

Police Response and Charges

Atikhun was charged with 'robbery at night with a weapon, or by two or more persons acting together to facilitate the theft or escape with the property'. Police Captain Assada Jarusombat of Tourist Police Division 1 stated, 'We presented evidence from security cameras and the phone taken from the Chinese tourist, which served as incriminating evidence that led to the issuance of the arrest warrant. The suspect surrendered due to the evidence against her, and was handed over to the inquiry officer along with the seized items for further legal proceedings.'

Broader Pattern of Violence in Sin City

This arrest occurs against a backdrop of escalating violent attacks on tourists in Pattaya, a resort town infamous for its nightlife and sex industry. Recent incidents include:

  • On February 24, a cross-dresser named Fuengfah allegedly stole 20,000 baht and attacked a 46-year-old Korean tourist, Kim Sangyul, when confronted.
  • Fuengfah was also implicated in a street assault on German tourist Markus Santl, 55, just one day earlier.
  • On February 17, a Chinese tourist was reportedly beaten and robbed by three sex workers after refusing to pay extra fees.
  • On February 11, a mass street brawl erupted between transgender sex workers and British tourists over alleged missing money in the same city.

Locals note that such violent episodes are common, particularly around Beach Road, a two-and-a-half-mile strip densely populated with street sex workers each night. Despite regular police crackdowns, sex workers often disperse upon seeing officers, only to regroup once patrols leave, leaving authorities frustrated and admitting privately that the issue remains largely unresolved.

Impact on Thailand's Tourism Image

Pattaya has evolved into Thailand's flagship tourist destination, driven by its vibrant bars, massage parlours, and affordable sex services. However, this recent spate of crimes is tarnishing the broader perception of Thailand as a family-friendly holiday spot renowned for its stunning beaches, exquisite cuisine, and rich cultural history. The juxtaposition of these violent incidents with the country's efforts to promote tourism poses a significant challenge for local authorities and the tourism industry alike.
