A West Midlands Police officer was struck on the head with his own baton during a struggle with a suspect who then fled on an electric bike in Handsworth, Birmingham. The incident occurred on Friday, July 3, during a stop and search on Soho Road.

Video footage shows two officers attempting to restrain a man dressed in black. The suspect clings to railings as officers try to force him to the ground. One officer knees the man in the leg, while another pulls at his leg. The man resists, and an officer warns he will use a Taser.

Suspect grabs dropped baton and strikes officer

During the struggle, a police baton falls to the ground. The suspect reaches for it and hits one officer over the head before jumping onto an electric bike and speeding away. The injured officer is seen lying on the pavement before getting up and using his radio. The second officer attempts to grab the fleeing man but fails.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson said: "We're investigating an incident on Soho Road, Birmingham, and want to speak to Mahroy Stephenson. During a stop and search by officers... one officer suffered a head injury. He was treated at hospital and thankfully has since been discharged."

Suspect identified and wanted for GBH

Police have named the suspect as Mahroy Stephenson, 30, from the Bartley Green area of Birmingham. He is wanted on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Additionally, he is wanted on suspicion of an assault that occurred on June 21.

The force is urging anyone with information to contact them on 999 quoting crime reference 20/309319/26.
