Alan Shearer has voiced concerns over Jordan Pickford's performances at the World Cup, suggesting the Everton goalkeeper has not been at his usual high standards. Shearer believes the constant tinkering of England's back four by manager Thomas Tuchel may be a contributing factor.
Pickford's Form Under Scrutiny
Pickford, 32, with 87 international caps and two European Championship finals appearances, has faced criticism after being beaten at his near post by Brian Cipenga in England's last-32 match against Democratic Republic of Congo. The goal put England on the brink of elimination until a late comeback inspired by Harry Kane. DR Congo also hit the post through Yoane Wissa in the first half.
Shearer's Analysis
Speaking to Betfair ahead of England's last-16 clash with Mexico, Shearer said: "The manager's got decisions to make... I do think the back four looks shaky. I do think Pickford hasn't looked his normal self as well." He added: "I guess because of the chopping and changing of the back four, I don't think that has helped Pickford. But he certainly hasn't looked as assured and his kicking hasn't been as good as it normally is."
Shearer noted that Pickford would likely expect to keep out the DR Congo goal, attributing the lapse to the defensive instability. The former England striker emphasized that Pickford's high standards for his country may be affected by the lack of consistency in the defensive lineup.
Tuchel's Defensive Rotation
Tuchel has experimented with his back four throughout the tournament, including options like Djed Spence and Ezri Konsa alongside John Stones. Shearer questioned whether these changes are causing confusion, stating, "I don't know whether it's confusing or not, but that's moving the players around again, which I don't think has been ideal."
England face Mexico in the round of 16 on Monday morning, with Tuchel expected to make a decision on his defensive setup.
