A Florida man has been arrested after he was caught on camera driving backwards along a busy road, claiming his car had become mechanically stuck in reverse. The incident occurred on Friday, 13 March, prompting multiple calls to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office from concerned motorists.
Driver Claims Vehicle Malfunction Led to Unusual Maneuver
William Murphy III, a 47-year-old resident of Palm Coast, Florida, told law enforcement officers that he was attempting to drive to an AutoZone store for repairs when his vehicle allegedly malfunctioned. Despite the car being capable of moving forward, Murphy insisted it was stuck in reverse, leading him to navigate backwards on the road.
Arrest and Charges Filed
Upon investigation, deputies discovered that Murphy was driving with a suspended or revoked license, a violation for which he has a history. He was subsequently arrested on charges of habitual driving while his license was suspended or revoked. This charge reflects a pattern of non-compliance with driving regulations.
Murphy was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility following his arrest. He was later released after posting a $1,000 bond, allowing him to await further legal proceedings outside of custody.
