The grieving parents of a teenage boy killed in a tragic e-bike collision have issued a stark warning to young people, emphasising that 'that quick thrill is not worth the risk.' Finley Dawson, aged 14, was riding an electric motorbike when it collided with a Kia Sportage in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, last Thursday evening.
Details of the Devastating Incident
The crash occurred on Newbold Road in the town at approximately 8:30pm. Finley and another boy, a 15-year-old pillion passenger, were thrown from the bike onto the road following the impact. Finley was rushed to hospital, but his injuries were described as 'non survivable,' and he tragically passed away the following day. The other boy remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition, facing a long recovery.
Police Investigation and Family Statement
Derbyshire police have confirmed that the driver of the Kia is being treated as a witness and is assisting officers with enquiries. No arrests have been made at this time. In a joint statement, the families of both boys highlighted the dangers of electric motorbikes being ridden on roads. They stated: 'There is a reason these bikes are banned from the road, and devastatingly Finley has paid the ultimate price in losing his life. His friend has sustained serious injuries and has to come to terms with growing up without his best mate.'
Urgent Safety Warning
The families added: 'Although the thrill of riding an electric bike on the road seems exciting, it can also be fatal. That quick thrill is not worth the risk.' This heartfelt message underscores the severe consequences of ignoring road safety regulations. In the UK, you must be 16 and hold a valid driving licence to ride an electronic motorbike on roads. For electronic bikes with pedals, they can be ridden by anyone over 14 on roads and cycle paths, provided the 'continuous rated power' output does not exceed 250 watts.
This incident serves as a sombre reminder of the critical importance of adhering to legal requirements and prioritising safety over momentary excitement. The community in Chesterfield is mourning the loss of a young life, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this devastating crash.
