Teen Driver Dies Days After Passing Test in Devon Road Tragedy
Teen Dies Days After Passing Driving Test in Devon Crash

A teenage boy has tragically died after losing control of his car on a rural Devon road only days after passing his driving test, an inquest has concluded. Archie Harris, aged 17, was driving his Ford Fiesta on the A3071 near his home in Holsworthy, Devon, when the fatal incident occurred on May 26.

Details of the Fatal Collision

The inquest, held in Exeter, heard that Archie was travelling too fast around a bend, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. His car left the road, struck a tree, and landed nose down in a gully at Blakea Bridge near Beaworthy. Emergency services attended the scene, but Archie was pronounced dead at 4.39pm after being ejected from the vehicle. A post-mortem examination confirmed he died from multiple injuries, with no alcohol detected in his system.

Sequence of Events Leading to the Crash

On the day of his death, Archie had met friends at the Memorial Hall car park in Holsworthy before driving in a three-car convoy to The Bickford Arms pub a few miles away on the A3072. After playing pool, the group left shortly before 4pm, with Archie's car being the last in the convoy. Witnesses reported seeing cars driving recklessly at speed around the bend, and it is believed Archie was exceeding the 60mph speed limit.

One witness described seeing the third vehicle, driven by Archie, swerve while rounding the bend before rolling and landing in a roadside gully. The witness immediately pulled over and called 999. Archie's friends, who had pulled over when they noticed he was no longer behind them, could not locate him until police blocked the road.

Inquest Findings and Coroner's Conclusion

Crash investigators found no defects with Archie's car or issues with the weather conditions. Coroner Alison Longhorn concluded that Archie was driving in excess of 80mph, was not wearing a seatbelt, and was operating beyond his level of experience when he lost traction and spun out of control. She recorded his death as a result of a road traffic collision.

Family Tributes and Emotional Impact

Archie, a former student of Holsworthy primary and secondary schools who worked as a builder's labourer, was described by his parents as 'the life and soul' of any gathering. His mother, Georgina, stated in a heartfelt statement that Archie had 'confidence in abundance' and 'swagger to complement it,' always polite and with a large friendship group.

She expressed that his death has left a 'massive void' in the lives of his family and friends, describing him as a large character who wore his heart on his sleeve. The family thanked emergency services and supporters, while Georgina reflected on the ongoing issue of road traffic deaths, hoping for future solutions to prevent such tragedies.

This incident highlights the dangers faced by inexperienced drivers, particularly when combined with speeding and failure to use seatbelts, underscoring a poignant reminder of road safety responsibilities.
