In the latest edition of Just Jane, agony aunt Jane O'Gorman addresses a mother's fears that her daughter may be selling sex. The mother, writing to the Daily Star, describes her 28-year-old daughter as beautiful and confident, but notes she lives in a flash apartment, drives an expensive car, and wears new outfits and a valuable watch. The daughter claims to be an entrepreneur, but the mother suspects a secret life, especially after an ex-neighbour called her daughter a 'filthy disgrace' and suggested he saw something online.
Mother's Concerns and Daughter's Secrecy
The mother says her daughter never introduces boyfriends or talks about men, and she has noticed a sadness in her eyes. Despite the daughter's generosity with money and gifts, the mother dreads what she might be doing and pleads for help to get her daughter to sort her life out before something terrible happens.
Jane O'Gorman's Advice
Jane O'Gorman advises the mother to accept that her daughter has chosen her own path. She points out there is no concrete proof of sex work; the daughter could be in a relationship with a married person or have a sugar daddy. Jane suggests the mother tell her daughter she is under no obligation to support her, and to beg her to look after herself, not take risks, and remember her self-respect. She adds that the truth will likely come out eventually.
Jane also advises that if the daughter is running a business, she should ensure her accounts and tax returns are in order.
Second Letter: Nasty Piece of Work
Another reader writes about her father, who cheated on her mother for years before an acrimonious divorce in 2018. He is now married to a woman who praises him as loyal and honest. The reader is tempted to reveal the truth but has bitten her tongue so far.
Jane advises that the father may have changed, and the stepmother likely already knows about his past, which is why she keeps him on a tight rein. She suggests ensuring the birth mother is supported, and notes that everyone is entitled to reform.
