Taylor Swift's extravagant New York City wedding to Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden has drawn criticism from exhausted NYPD officers forced to work 30-hour shifts in sweltering 100-degree Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) heat. The July 3 ceremony, officiated by Adam Sandler and attended by A-listers including Ed Sheeran, Gigi Hadid, and Bradley Cooper, prompted a massive police presence to ensure security, but officers report inadequate provisions and extreme fatigue.
Officers Describe Grueling Conditions
An anonymous NYPD officer told the US Sun: 'It's the hottest day of the year, and everyone's on overtime with no breaks in the sun. We're just looking for shade.' The officer added that workers had to purchase their own drinks, stating, 'You'd think they'd hand out beverages to all the workers just because it's so hot.' Another officer noted that some colleagues had worked over 24 to 30 consecutive hours without breaks due to the wedding coinciding with America's 250th anniversary celebrations and the FIFA World Cup.
Wedding Disrupts City Access
The officer highlighted the disruption caused by the event: 'You can't get into the Garden, you can't use the entrances or the streets.' The wedding, which featured a reception at MSG, drew hundreds of officers, stretching NYPD resources thin amid a busy holiday weekend.
Swift's Charitable Contributions
Ahead of the wedding, Swift and Kelce donated $26 million (£19 million) to various US charities, including $2 million to the NY Police and Fire Widows' & Children's Benefit Fund (Answer the Call), which publicly thanked the couple. The anonymous officer praised the donation, and reports indicate Swift is also contributing to part of the workers' overtime pay.
Wedding Highlights and Controversies
During the reception, Lena Dunham's speech reportedly caused a stir with the remark: 'American football is just straight guys reenacting gay porn,' dividing guests, many of whom were Travis's NFL teammates. Meanwhile, Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds were notably absent, reportedly due to a rift stemming from Lively's legal dispute with Justin Baldoni.
Metro has reached out to Taylor Swift's representatives for comment.
