Tragic River Accident Claims Lives of Two Indian Nationals on NSW Mid North Coast

The two young men who tragically drowned in a river accident on the New South Wales Mid North Coast during the Australia Day long weekend have now been formally identified. The victims, Indian nationals named Sachin and Sahil, were both in their 30s and had been enjoying a day out with their partners when the incident occurred.

Details of the Fatal Incident

The tragedy unfolded at approximately 6:45 PM on Sunday at the Never Never River, located at John Locke Place in Gleniffer. According to loved ones, the group was being responsible and cautious, initially stepping only into shallow water. However, in a sudden and unforeseeable moment, a powerful current surged and swept both men away.

Despite rescue efforts, Sachin and Sahil could not be saved after they were pulled from the river. In a further devastating turn, Sachin's fiancée, who bravely attempted to assist, was rushed to Coffs Harbour Health Campus in a serious condition and remains hospitalised with critical injuries.

Heartbreaking Aftermath for the Families

The incident has left both families shattered. Sahil leaves behind his wife, who is seven months pregnant. Compounding the grief, it has been revealed that both men's fathers are themselves battling serious medical conditions, leaving them unable to bear the sudden financial burden.

In response, family friend Sunita Kalkal has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to provide crucial support. Ms Kalkal described how the long weekend quickly turned into an unthinkable tragedy. "What should have been an innocent moment turned into an unthinkable tragedy," she said.

Community Support and Fundraising Efforts

The families are hoping to receive support from both the Australian and Indian communities. The fundraiser aims to raise $200,000 to cover several pressing needs:

  • Repatriating Sachin and Sahil's bodies to India.
  • Covering funeral and repatriation expenses.
  • Providing financial support for the grieving families during this immensely difficult time.

So far, the campaign has drawn significant sympathy, raising over $103,000 towards its goal.

Ongoing Investigations

Following the incident, police established a crime scene as part of their initial investigations. Authorities have confirmed that a report will be prepared for the Coroner to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the double drowning. The local community and authorities continue to process the shocking event that has claimed two lives and critically injured another.
