Gwent Police have charged a 14-year-old boy with murder after the body of a missing girl, believed to be 14-year-old Lilly Jones, was discovered in a park in Blaenau Gwent. The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Newport Magistrates Court on Friday, June 26.
Lilly, from Blaina, was reported missing on Saturday, June 20. A large-scale search operation was launched, and her body was found in the Duffryn Park area shortly after 10:10 p.m. on Monday, June 22. Two local residents are said to have discovered the body. While formal identification has not yet taken place, police have informed Lilly's family, who are being supported by specially trained officers.
Arrest and Charge
The 14-year-old suspect, described as a white British boy from the Blaenau Gwent area, was arrested on Tuesday, June 23, on suspicion of murder. He was subsequently charged and remains in police custody. A police spokesperson confirmed: "Gwent Police has charged a 14-year-old boy with murder as part of our investigation in Blaenau Gwent."
The spokesperson added: "We are releasing Lilly's name at this point, with her family's knowledge, because it will form part of the court proceedings and be a matter of public record."
Ongoing Investigation
Police cordons remain in place across Blaina, including at Duffryn Park, where forensic examinations are continuing. Detective Chief Inspector Steven Thomas stated: "Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Lilly at this difficult time." He urged the public to be mindful of their language, especially online, as it could affect the investigation and any potential prosecution. "Even though we've reached this significant development in our investigation, our enquiries continue and you will still see a significant police presence in the area," he said.
Tributes to Lilly
Lilly's school, Brynmawr Foundation School, paid tribute to her, describing her as a "valued member of the school community" known for her "kindness, warmth, and bubbly personality." The headteacher said her loss will be felt "profoundly" by all who knew her. Friends and family have left tributes near the cordon at Duffryn Park.
Detective Chief Inspector Thomas thanked local residents for their support and patience during the ongoing police operation. He said examinations of scenes will continue in the coming days.
