Nine people are in hospital with life-threatening injuries following a knife attack on a train in Cambridgeshire on Saturday evening. British Transport Police said the incident occurred on the 18:25 service from Doncaster to London King's Cross, with the train making an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon station after reports of multiple stabbings at 19:39.
Armed police, paramedics, and air ambulances responded to the scene. Two people have been arrested, and one suspect is believed to have been tasered. Ten people were taken to hospital; nine are believed to have life-threatening injuries, and one has non-life-threatening injuries. There have been no fatalities.
Witnesses described scenes of panic, with passengers trampling each other and hiding in toilets. One witness told the BBC his hand was 'covered in blood' after leaning on a chair. Another said an older man blocked the attacker from stabbing a younger girl, sustaining a gash to his head and neck. The attack lasted 10 to 15 minutes.
The incident has been declared a major incident, and Counter Terrorism Policing is supporting the investigation. Huntingdon station remains closed, and train services have been cancelled. Chief Superintendent Chris Casey said: 'This is a shocking incident and first and foremost my thoughts are with those who have been injured this evening and their families.'
