A young father bled to death in what is believed to be a botched punishment shooting in Dun Laoghaire, south Dublin, early on Sunday morning. Mark Cullen, 39, was shot once in the leg during a pre-arranged meeting and died within minutes from massive blood loss after a bullet severed an artery.
Victim Released from Prison Two Weeks Ago
Sources have confirmed that Mr Cullen, from nearby Shankill, had been released from prison just a fortnight ago after serving a sentence for producing an article. He was a repeat offender but was not considered a significant criminal, though he had links to a local crime gang involved in low-level drug dealing.
Shooting Scene and Investigation
The shooting occurred on Patrician Park, a small street off Kill Avenue in Dun Laoghaire, around 8:30am. Gardai believe Mr Cullen arrived for a pre-arranged meeting when he was shot once in the leg. He stumbled out onto the street and died quickly. A source stated, "In as much as a shooting can be accidental, this seems to be it." The area was cordoned off for examination by the Garda Technical Bureau, and road closures were in place on Kill Avenue and Glenageary Road Upper.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed, and an incident room has been established at Dun Laoghaire Garda Station. Gardai are appealing for any witnesses or road users with dash-cam footage who were near Kill Avenue between 8:00am and 9:00am on Sunday 5th July 2026 to come forward. Contact Dun Laoghaire Garda Station on 01 666 5000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
Community Shock and Reaction
Locals expressed disbelief following the deadly shooting. Resident Irene Hayden said, "It is a really quiet area. We have been living here 20 plus years and never had anything like this before. It is a bit scary, that is so close to home that it could happen." Local Labour Party councillor Thomas Joseph added, "I have not seen anything like this before and the people are shocked and scared. People are living very peacefully, especially in this area."
First Firearm Fatality in Republic Since May 2024
This marks the first firearm fatality in the Republic since May 2024, when minor criminal Josh Itseli, 20, was fatally shot by an associate in Drimnagh, south Dublin. Gardai believe that death was also accidental, similar to Mr Cullen's case.
