Key members of the infamous Daniel crime clan have been thrust into the spotlight after Douglas Daniel, brother of family kingpin Jamie, was jailed alongside his wife Barbra for the evil treatment of children in their care.
The Notorious Daniel Clan
The Daniel crime clan controlled drug networks in Glasgow, raking in tens of millions of pounds over decades. Their reign saw a violent feud with the rival Lyons family, resulting in years of murders, shootings, and stabbings. Bitter hits led to key associates being jailed for years.
Douglas and Barbara Daniel Sentenced
In March, Douglas Daniel, 80, and his wife Barbara, 75, were jailed for 30 months at Glasgow Sheriff Court. The depraved pair were found guilty of subjecting six children—aged between four and 14—to cruel and unnatural treatment at their Parkhead home between 1986 and 1991. The court heard horrific punishment methods, including forcing children into an animal pen, making one stand with geese that pecked her skin, and ordering another to bathe in a bird bath. Some children went hungry, with one recalling being fed cow tongue intended for pet ferrets. At least one child was made to sit on the floor with pet dogs during meals. The children were also subjected to violent physical assaults, locked in rooms, monitored with alarmed windows, and had restricted bathroom access, including only one square of toilet paper. Some were forced to stand facing the wall for hours, occasionally on one leg, sometimes to the point of collapse. Douglas was allowed to care for the victims despite a string of previous convictions. One survivor now intends to sue Glasgow City Council.
The Daniel Family Tree
Jamie Daniel
Kingpin Jamie Daniel was said to make £16 million per year from his criminal enterprise before his death at age 58 in 2016 after a four-year battle with cancer. His life of crime began on the streets of Possilpark, stealing scrap metal and shoplifting, before moving on to selling drugs. At 25, he was jailed for heroin smuggling. After release, he forged links with crooks across the UK and continued to import drugs from Pakistan. He was believed to be the main heroin supplier in Glasgow for decades and earned up to £1 million a month from cigarette smuggling. He was linked to the murder of gangster Frank McPhie, gunned down by a sniper in 2000. His funeral at Clydebank Crematorium was attended by 600 people, including many of his ten children.
Norman Daniel
Norman, also known as Snudger, along with brothers David, Jamie, and Ronnie, went from petty criminals to building a £16 million crime empire from stolen cars, firearms, and major drug smuggling. Another brother, William, served time for killing Special Police Constable George Gates in 1969. Norman became a victim of a firebomb attack in 2025, when his home in Bishopbriggs was torched.
Steven "Bonzo" Daniel
Steven "Bonzo" Daniel, Jamie's nephew, assumed control of the group after Jamie's death. In 2017, he was ambushed by Lyons members after a Rangers match, suffering horrific facial wounds. He has been the target of several attacks, including a firebombing at his luxury home in 2024. A £100k bounty was placed on his head by rival Ross McGill.
Francis "Fraggle" Green
Francis Green, son of Jamie, was jailed for three-and-a-half years for attacking a grandmother in 2011. In 2017, a gunman opened fire on his home. A motor company previously connected to him was set on fire in 2024, claimed by Ross McGill's group.
Zander Sutherland
Zander, another son of Jamie, was sentenced to 13.5 years in 2016 for heroin dealing. He fled to Norway while on leave from open prison after death threats but was extradited back to Scotland in December, receiving an additional 10 months.
Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll
Gerbil, a feared enforcer married to Jamie's daughter Kelly, was shot dead in 2010 in a targeted attack at an Asda car park. He was believed to have sanctioned a 2006 attack on Applerow Motors that killed Michael Lyons, leading to retaliation.
Robert Daniel
Robert, cousin of Steven Daniel, was the intended target of a machete attack at his garage in 2024. He was shot and seriously injured in 2017 outside his home in Stepps.
