Nick Kyrgios left himself at risk of another Wimbledon fine after swearing at the umpire during a men's doubles match on Wednesday. The Australian, partnering Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan, voiced his frustrations in the second set against Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic. Kyrgios, who was fined multiple times during his run to the 2022 final, told the umpire he was prepared to accept another penalty, calling the rules “dumb.”
Outburst During Second Set
“Honestly at this point you can fine me, I honestly don't even care,” the 31-year-old said. “Honestly you can fine me, I don't give a s***. All these rules are so dumb anyway.” The outburst came after Arevalo and Pavic broke serve to lead 1-0 at the start of the second set. It was unclear what the umpire said to provoke the response. Kyrgios then shook his head, adjusted his cap, and returned to his position.
Potential Fines Under Grand Slam Rules
According to the Grand Slam rulebook, Kyrgios could face a fine of up to $50,000 (£37,000) for audible obscenity. The rules state: “Players shall not use audible obscenity within the precinct of the tournament site. Violation of this Section shall subject a player to a fine up to $50,000 for each violation.” Additionally, a separate rule on sportsmanlike conduct carries a fine of up to $100,000 for each violation.
Match Performance
Arevalo and Pavic took an early lead, winning the first six points. A single break was enough for the seeded pair to take the opening set 6-3, as Kyrgios and Bublik converted none of their break points. Bublik had already advanced to the second round of the men's singles, but the doubles pairing struggled against their opponents. Kyrgios won the Australian Open doubles title in 2022 alongside Thanasi Kokkinakis.
