Merseyside Police responded to reports of a man being shot in the neck on Waddicar Lane in Melling, Liverpool, on the morning of July 1. The incident occurred just before 11:15 a.m., prompting a significant police response that included armed officers reportedly jumping over garden fences during a search of the area.
Victim Stable, Arrest Made
A man in his 40s sustained a neck injury from an air rifle and was taken to the hospital, where he remains in a stable condition. Police quickly arrested a 35-year-old man on suspicion of section 18 wounding and possession of a firearm. The suspect is currently in police custody.
Investigation Underway
Merseyside Police have launched a full investigation, conducting house-to-house inquiries, reviewing CCTV footage, and speaking with witnesses. A cordon was initially placed on Waddicar Lane between Rainbow Drive and Spencer's Lane but has since been lifted. However, a cordon remains outside a row of shops, including a GoLocal newsagents and a pharmacy.
Local residents told reporters from the Liverpool Echo that they saw armed police jumping fences into people's gardens during the search.
Police Appeal for Information
Sefton neighbourhood Chief Inspector Dave Uren said: “The investigation is in the very early stages as we speak to witnesses and establish what has taken place. A man has been taken to hospital and we have made an arrest but we would urgently appeal for anyone who was in the area of Waddicar Lane this morning who heard or saw anything suspicious to contact us. Weapons have no place on the streets of Merseyside as we know the devastation they can cause so my appeal would be for the public to support us by telling us what they know.”
