Romanian Court Rejects Wiz Khalifa's Appeal Against Jail Sentence
A Romanian court has firmly rejected an appeal by American rapper Wiz Khalifa to overturn his nine-month jail sentence for drug possession, marking a significant legal setback for the artist. The Constanta Court of Appeal delivered its decision on Thursday, dismissing the appeal as inadmissible and upholding the original conviction handed down in December.
Background of the Case
The legal troubles for Wiz Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, began in July 2024 when he was stopped by Romanian police. Authorities alleged that he was smoking cannabis on stage at the Beach, Please! Festival in Constanta County. Prosecutors stated that the rapper was found in possession of more than 18 grams of cannabis and had consumed some during the performance.
In April of that year, a lower court had initially issued Khalifa a criminal fine of 3,600 lei, equivalent to approximately $830, for illegal possession of dangerous drugs. However, prosecutors appealed this decision, seeking a harsher penalty, which led to the December conviction and the subsequent nine-month jail sentence.
Court's Ruling and Legal Implications
The appeals court not only rejected Khalifa's appeal to annul the sentence but also ruled as unfounded a request to suspend the sentence. The court convicted him of "possession of dangerous drugs, without right, for personal consumption," underscoring Romania's stringent drug laws. Possession of cannabis for personal use in Romania is criminalized and can result in prison sentences ranging from three months to two years, or substantial fines.
It remains unclear whether Romanian authorities will pursue an extradition request, given that Khalifa is a U.S. citizen and does not reside in Romania. The Associated Press reached out to Khalifa's representatives for comment on these latest developments but has not yet received a response.
Broader Context of Drug Laws in Romania
Romania is known for having some of the harsher drug laws in Europe, with strict penalties for possession even for personal use. This case highlights the legal risks artists and tourists may face in the country regarding drug-related offenses. The rejection of Khalifa's appeal serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences under Romanian jurisdiction.
As the legal process continues, observers are watching to see if further actions, such as extradition efforts, will be taken. For now, the rapper's sentence stands, pending any additional appeals or international legal maneuvers.
