Teenager Faces Multiple Charges in Brutal Downers Grove Attack

A 19-year-old man has been charged with multiple serious offences following a horrific incident in Downers Grove, Illinois, that claimed the life of a pregnant woman and her unborn child. The attack, which involved stabbing and arson, has left a family devastated and a community in shock.

Details of the Tragic Incident

Emergency services responded to a fire at an apartment in Downers Grove shortly before 9 p.m. on Monday. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered 30-year-old Eliza Morales inside the burning property. Tragically, Ms. Morales, who was five months pregnant with her second daughter, had sustained multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators from the Downers Grove Police Department quickly determined that the fire had been deliberately set. Their inquiry led to the arrest of Nedas Revuckas, a 19-year-old resident of nearby Westmont.

Confrontation and Charges

According to police reports, the incident began when Mr Revuckas attempted to break into Ms Morales's apartment with the intent to rob her. It is alleged that Ms Morales confronted the teenager at her door in an effort to stop the intrusion.

The subsequent attack resulted in Mr Revuckas facing a series of severe charges filed in DuPage County court on Tuesday. These include:

  • Three counts of first-degree murder
  • One count of intentional homicide of an unborn child
  • Armed robbery
  • Aggravated arson
  • Aggravated cruelty to an animal

The animal cruelty charge relates to the alleged stabbing of a dog during the attack.

Victim's Background and Family Impact

Eliza Morales worked in the payroll department of a children's hospital and was married to her high school sweetheart, Gabriel Morales. The couple were expecting a baby girl in March and already had a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter, who was fortunately with her grandmother at the time of the attack.

Family members stated that Ms Morales was home alone preparing dinner when the suspect attacked her. They confirmed they had no prior knowledge of or connection to Mr Revuckas.

In a heartbreaking statement reported by WLS, Gabriel Morales expressed his profound grief: "I'm gonna spend the rest of my life missing her. I can get every second back with her and just continue try to live through her for my daughter. And continue to be strong for my family." He was at work when he received the devastating news about his wife and unborn child.

Additional Injuries and Legal Proceedings

Police confirmed that a second individual, who has not been publicly named, was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation before being transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for further medical attention.

Nedas Revuckas is currently being held at DuPage County Jail. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 28, where a detention hearing will take place to determine his custody status while awaiting trial.

The community of Downers Grove is now grappling with the aftermath of this senseless violence, as the legal process begins to unfold for the accused teenager.
