Three tourists from Mullingar, Co Westmeath, have been identified as the victims of a fatal motorway crash near Malaga, Spain, in the early hours of Sunday. The deceased are brothers Mark and Ian McCullagh, along with their partners, Michaela Newcombe and Amy McCullagh. Mark, Michaela, and Amy died at the scene, while Ian McCullagh, Amy's husband, sustained serious injuries and is receiving medical treatment.
Crash Details and Emergency Response
Spanish authorities reported that two vehicles collided on the A7 motorway at 2:38 am local time. One vehicle subsequently plunged down an embankment. Emergency services, including firefighters and Guardia Civil officers, attended the scene. The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
Community and Political Reactions
Westmeath County Council observed a minute's silence at Monday's council meeting. Independent Councillor Michael Dollard described the victims as "very well-known people around the town" and said it would take "a long time" for the community to "understand how three young lives can be taken away so quickly, especially people away on holiday." He called the incident "a tragedy for all of the families" and a reminder of "how fragile human life is."
Minister of State and TD Robert Troy, who knows one of the families, said they received the "absolutely devastating" news on Sunday evening. Speaking to RTÉ, he said: "I spoke to them yesterday and needless to say they're absolutely devastated. It's the worst of phone calls to get; they only went on holiday at the end of last week." He added that the local community was equally "devastated" and "saddened."

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it is providing consular assistance to the families. A spokesperson stated: "The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of this incident in Spain, and is currently providing consular assistance to the families involved.
