Dog Trainer Warns About Leaving Dogs Home Alone

Dog trainer Sarah Hodgson has issued advice for households that leave their pets home alone, highlighting a key factor that can affect a dog's anxiety levels. Healthy adult dogs can generally be left for 4-6 hours, with 8 hours as the maximum limit, according to experts.

Creating a Calm Environment

In a TikTok video, Hodgson explained that dogs left in rooms with wide open windows overlooking hallways or streets may "assume the role of border patrol," reacting territorially to passing stimuli. She recommends establishing a safe space, such as a crate or dedicated room, that feels comforting to the pet.

Hodgson also suggests using sound-cancelling music or audio to block external noises. When returning home, she advises owners to keep their energy calm, as dogs will mirror their behaviour. "When you come in you want it to be a joyous occasion but keep your energy level calm and they'll mirror what you're modelling," she said.

Dogs Trust Recommendations

Dogs Trust, the UK's leading dog welfare charity, supports this guidance. They advise teaching dogs that being alone is acceptable before actually leaving them. Practical measures include providing a cosy bed, creating a "doggy den," using baby gates for gradual separation, and teaching dogs to relax quietly without constant attention.

The charity also recommends acclimatising dogs to progressively longer periods alone, both while the owner is at home and away. "The more you do this before you actually need to leave the house, the easier it will be when you do," they stated.
