The 2020 period drama Emma, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, has been added to Netflix, delighting fans who have called the film a 'masterpiece'. The adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel features a star-studded cast including Bill Nighy, Josh O'Connor, and Mia Goth.
A Rising Star
Anya Taylor-Joy, 30, who was raised in the UK after being born in Argentina, has become one of the most sought-after actresses of her generation. She first gained attention in the 2015 gothic horror film The Witch and later proved her horror credentials in Split and its sequel Glass. Taylor-Joy has also delivered critically acclaimed performances in the dark comedy Thoroughbreds and the BBC series Peaky Blinders, where she played Gina Gray.
Her breakthrough role came as Beth Harmon in Netflix's The Queen's Gambit, for which she won a Golden Globe. More recently, she has starred in Last Night in Soho, The Northman, The Menu, The Super Mario Bros Movie and its sequel, and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. She is currently working on the third Dune film.
The Film: Emma
Directed by Autumn de Wilde in her feature debut, Emma follows the wealthy and elegant Miss Emma Woodhouse (Taylor-Joy) as she amuses herself with matchmaking in Regency-era England. The cast includes Johnny Flynn, Josh O'Connor, Callum Turner, Mia Goth, Miranda Hart, and Bill Nighy. The film was nominated for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling at the 93rd Academy Awards.
Critics gave the film a score of 86% based on 257 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The critical consensus reads: 'Other adaptations may do a better job of consistently capturing the spirit of the classic source material, but Jane Austen fans should still find a solid match in this Emma.'
