The Derbyshire village of Barlow, with a population of just 917 according to the 2021 Census, has been recognised as a premier destination for hikers and food lovers alike, thanks to its award-winning pub and prime location on the edge of the Peak District National Park.
The Tickled Trout: England's Pub of the Year 2026
Visit England has named The Tickled Trout in Barlow as the silver winner in its Pub of the Year 2026 awards, placing it among the best in the country. The stylish independent gastro pub and restaurant is owned by Chris Mapp, who took over the establishment after it had been his local. The pub “prides itself on serving great pub food alongside innovative specials” and sources “high quality artisan ingredients” from as many “producers, providers, artisans and aficionados” in Derbyshire as possible.
Customer reviews on TripAdvisor have been glowing. One patron wrote: “Best Sunday lunch ever. A few Michelin restaurants aren’t as good as this fantastic country pub.” Another added: “I have no greater compliment to pay than to say that I'd love to eat here every week. Great service, well-kept beer, lively clientele, all enjoying themselves. And then the food. What magnificent food. Tasty, creamy, rich, delicious. Best restaurant I've been to in a very long time. Long may it continue.”

In addition to The Tickled Trout, the village is home to The Peacock at Barlow, a gastropub located in a four-star hotel, and Hackney House, a cosy café serving homemade cakes and pastries. However, there is no traditional corner shop in the village.
