Filipino Photographer's Smartphone Shot Shortlisted for Prestigious Award

In a remarkable demonstration of modern mobile photography, Easelyn Pineda captured a powerful image of two traditional Filipino spearfishers battling adverse weather conditions using only her smartphone. The photograph, titled The Island's Leap of Faith, 2025, was taken on an Honor 90 device and has since earned a place on the shortlist for the motion category at the prestigious 2026 Sony World Photography awards.

A Serene Getaway Turns into a Photographic Opportunity

Laiya beach, located approximately three hours by car from Pineda's home in Quezon City, Philippines, served as the picturesque backdrop for this unexpected moment. During a September visit with friends, the group enjoyed fresh seafood, snorkelling, and beachcombing, sifting through tide pools to collect beautiful seashells. However, the tranquil atmosphere shifted dramatically late one afternoon.

The weather turned abruptly, with an ocean breeze bringing a light rain shower that progressively darkened the skies. It was then that Pineda noticed two young men from the local community engaged in traditional spearfishing just off the shore. "It seemed like they were braving the weather to see if they could add some food to the table for the day," she recalls. "It was a very humbling thing to witness and capture."

Technical Challenges and Artistic Adjustments

Pineda waded into the water with her phone to achieve a closer perspective, later making careful adjustments during editing to ensure the forms of the fishers were not lost in silhouette against the gloomy backdrop. She notes that the rain and fading light actually enhanced the image by emphasising the challenging and labour-intensive nature of traditional spearfishing. "It made the subject's effort stand out even more," she explains.

The photographer expressed particular relief at successfully capturing the shot without her device ending up in the sea, highlighting the spontaneous and unscripted authenticity of the moment. "I was thrilled to capture such unscripted authenticity, and even more than that, relieved that I got the shot without my phone ending up in the sea!" she adds.

Cultural Reflection and International Recognition

Watching the spearfishers work inspired Pineda to reflect on what she describes as the "enduring strength and resilience of the Filipino spirit." Her photograph not only documents a traditional livelihood practice but also serves as a testament to human perseverance against natural elements.

The image's recognition by the Sony World Photography awards underscores the growing significance of smartphone photography in professional artistic circles. The 2026 exhibition featuring shortlisted works will be held at Somerset House in London from 17 April to 4 May, providing international exposure for Pineda's compelling visual narrative.
