A former teacher of Marcus Rashford has offered a glimpse into the England footballer's off-pitch persona, recalling his time as a student at Button Lane Primary School in Wythenshawe, Manchester.
Teacher's Recollections
Lucy Birchall, who taught Rashford in Year 4, told BBC Breakfast: "I taught Marcus when he was in year four. He was a really lovely boy, very genuine, down to earth." She added that everyone commented on his football skills, saying: "We're all hoping that he can bring it home for us!"
Rashford, now 28, joined Manchester United's academy at age seven and made his Premier League debut at 18 in February 2016. He recently scored in England's 4-2 World Cup victory over Croatia.
Return Visits
Chris Thomas, another staff member, noted: "He's never changed and when he has been back to see us, he's just as he always is. Still calls me miss! He's very respectful. The kids love it because obviously he's a hero to them."
One educator emphasized the school's significance: "His dream started here on this playground, and his dream of himself in an England shirt, getting out there and representing his country for football. It's all about inspiring children to think that they can go on and do something amazing."
Pupils' Perspectives
Current pupils expressed excitement about having a famous alumnus. One child described it as 'very exciting', while another said: "He's proved to everyone that if you believe that you can, you will."
