Michael Byrne, the esteemed British actor known for his roles in Coronation Street, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Braveheart, has died at the age of 82, his family confirmed.
Career Spanning Six Decades
Byrne's career spanned over 60 years, beginning on stage in the 1960s. He appeared in productions alongside Maggie Smith and Robert Stephens in Shaffer's The Royal Hunt of the Sun and Pinero's Trelawny of the Wells, according to The Mirror.
He transitioned to television and film, becoming a familiar face in British and international productions. On the small screen, he played the absent gay father of Gail Platt and ex-lover of Audrey Roberts on Coronation Street from 2008 to 2010. His character memorably gave Gail away at her wedding to Joe McIntyre. He was written out of the show in 2021.
Iconic Film Roles
Byrne appeared in several major film franchises. He played Colonel Vogel in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade opposite Harrison Ford, and portrayed English commanding officer Smythe in Braveheart alongside Sean Connery. He also acted in the James Bond film Tomorrow Never Dies.
In 2010, he played the powerful wizard Gellert Grindelwald in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. Other film credits include The Eagle Has Landed, A Bridge Too Far, The Medusa Touch, The Saint, The Sum of All Fears, and Gangs of New York.
Stage and Final Years
His final stage appearances came in Schiller's Mary Stuart in 2018 before he retired after an incredible 60-year career. He is survived by his former wife Carole, who cared for him towards the end of his life, their two daughters Tara and Bryony, and three grandchildren: Tom, Chloe, and Jasmine.
