Golden Globes 2026: Teyana Taylor Wins First Award, Dame Helen Mirren Honoured
Golden Globes 2026: Teyana Taylor Wins Best Supporting Actress

The 83rd Golden Globe Awards commenced in spectacular fashion on Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, with Teyana Taylor securing the first statuette of the evening.

Emotional Victory for Taylor

The 35-year-old actress and performer was visibly moved as she accepted the award for Best Supporting Actress. She was recognised for her role in Paul Thomas Anderson's epic drama One Battle After Another, where she starred opposite Leonardo DiCaprio. Taylor triumphed over a formidable shortlist that included Emily Blunt, Elle Fanning, Ariana Grande, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, and the presumed favourite, Amy Madigan. Madigan had won the equivalent category at the Critics Choice Awards just last week for her performance in Weapons.

Glaser's Gala and Major Contenders

For the second consecutive year, comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the ceremony, delivering her signature brand of fearless comedy. The 41-year-old host left few unscathed, with jokes targeting world events, corporate sales, and A-list attendees including George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio. In terms of nominations, One Battle After Another dominated the film field with an impressive nine nominations, including Best Picture, Director, and Screenplay. It faces competition in the Best Picture – Musical or Comedy category from films like Blue Moon, Marty Supreme, and Bugonia, with Wicked: For Good notably absent.

In television, Netflix's critically acclaimed series Adolescence earned five nominations, including acting nods for Stephen Graham, Erin Doherty, and 16-year-old Owen Cooper. However, The White Lotus narrowly led the TV pack with six nominations overall. This year's ceremony also marked the first time podcasts were honoured among the 28 categories.

Snubs, Surprises, and a Lifetime Achievement

The night was not without its surprises. Wicked: For Good was a shock omission from the Best Musical or Comedy category, despite acting nominations for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. Other notable snubs included Sydney Sweeney for Christy and Kathryn Bigelow's A House of Dynamite, which failed to secure a single nod.

One winner was announced ahead of the main event: Dame Helen Mirren will receive the prestigious Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement. The award will be presented in a separate ceremony on January 8th. Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne praised Mirren as "a force of nature" with a career that "continues to inspire generations."

The full list of nominees across film, television, and podcasting showcases a diverse and competitive year in entertainment, setting the stage for a dramatic awards season.
