The 2026 Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles delivered a night of historic wins and dramatic shifts in the awards season landscape. The ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel saw a British teenager make history and a major new favourite emerge for the upcoming Academy Awards.
A Star is Born: UK Teen Makes Golden Globes History
The evening's most heart-warming story belonged to 16-year-old Owen Cooper from Warrington. The actor, who is still studying for his GCSEs, became the youngest actor ever to win a Golden Globe. He took home the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a TV Series, Limited Series, or TV Movie for his role in the hit Netflix series Adolescence.
Far from being overwhelmed, Cooper appeared completely at ease amongst Hollywood's elite. He was photographed rubbing shoulders with legends George Clooney and Leonardo DiCaprio during the celebrations. His series, Adolescence, enjoyed a spectacular night, also winning Best Limited TV Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for TV, with co-stars Stephen Graham and Erin Doherty claiming acting awards as well.
Oscar Race Upended: Chalamet Soars Past DiCaprio
In a significant development for the upcoming Oscars, the betting favourite for the Best Actor award has dramatically changed. Timothée Chalamet, who won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Marty Supreme, has now surged ahead of Leonardo DiCaprio as the predicted winner.
Before the awards season, DiCaprio, nominated for One Battle After Another, was the odds-on favourite. However, according to the prediction market Kalshi, Chalamet is now the massive favourite to win the top acting prize at March's Academy Awards. Chalamet's acceptance speech also sparked chatter, as he gave a notably muted acknowledgement to his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, compared to a more public declaration the previous week.
Film and Television Winners Dominate the Night
On the film side, it was a tale of two pictures. One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, was the most awarded film of the night with four Globes, including the coveted Best Picture – Comedy or Musical. It triumphed over Chalamet's Marty Supreme and others. Anderson also won for Best Director and Best Screenplay, while Teyana Taylor won Best Supporting Actress.
However, it will face stiff competition at the Oscars from Hamnet, which won Best Picture – Drama. Hamnet's star, Jessie Buckley, won Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, triumphing over a field including Jennifer Lawrence and Julia Roberts.
In television, alongside Adolescence's success, The Pitt won Best TV Series – Drama, and The Studio won Best TV Series – Musical or Comedy.
The 2026 Golden Globes have set the stage for a fascinating run to the Oscars, cementing new stars like Owen Cooper and reshuffling the odds for Hollywood's highest honour.
