Ryan Coogler Triumphs with Best Original Screenplay Oscar for Sinners

At the 98th Academy Awards, filmmaker Ryan Coogler clinched the best original screenplay Oscar for his work on Sinners. This victory marks a significant milestone, as Coogler becomes only the second black writer to receive this honour, following Jordan Peele's win in 2018 for Get Out.

A Competitive Field Overcome

Coogler faced stiff competition in the category, including notable contenders such as Ronald Bronstein and Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme, Eskil Vogt and Joachim Trier for Sentimental Value, and Robert Kaplow for Blue Moon. His win underscores the critical acclaim and originality of Sinners, a film he also directed.

The movie features Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twins "Smoke" and "Stack" Moore, whose juke joint is besieged by vampires led by Jack O'Connell. Jordan's performance was later recognised with the best actor Oscar, adding to the film's accolades.

Dominance in Script Awards Season

Prior to the Oscars, Coogler had already made a strong impression in the awards circuit, securing best original screenplay wins at the Baftas, Writers Guild, and Critics Choice awards. He also received a nomination at the Golden Globes, highlighting the widespread recognition of his writing prowess.

Heartfelt Acceptance Speech

During his acceptance speech, Coogler expressed gratitude to the Academy and his fellow nominees. He acknowledged his cast and crew, inviting them to stand and be recognised. In a touching moment, he paid tribute to his wife and producer, Zinzi Coogler, crediting her for making each day better than the last.

Coogler also thanked his parents, saying, "Thank y'all for making me believe in myself." He concluded with an emotional message to his children, apologising for time spent away and expressing his love, stating, "Memories are all we have. I hope I'll give you some great ones. And that y'all blessed to live a long life, and your dad becomes just a memory. I want y'all to remember this one thing. I love y'all more than anything. Thank you."
