Actress Sarah Jessica Parker offered a rare and emotional glimpse into her family life while accepting a major honour during awards season. The Sex and the City star was presented with the Golden Globes' Carol Burnett Award during the CBS and Paramount primetime special, Golden Eve, held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on Tuesday, January 6.
An Emotional Acceptance Speech
Parker, 60, took to the stage to receive the lifetime achievement award from her husband, actor Matthew Broderick, 63, and close friends including former co-star Kristin Davis. In a lengthy and touching speech, she paid tribute to her career, her colleagues, and the legendary Carol Burnett, whom she called her "north star."
However, the most poignant moment came as she addressed her family directly. "To my beloved family, my brilliant husband, Matthew Broderick, who has been my husband for just shy of 30 years," she began. She humorously credited him with giving her a "family discount and all access pass to his masterclass in acting, comedy and dedication."
A Rare Public Nod to Her Children
The actress then turned her attention to the couple's three children, a subject she typically keeps private. Their eldest son, James Wilkie, 23, was present in the audience to support his parents. Parker also spoke of their 16-year-old twin daughters, Marion Loretta Elwell and Tabitha Hodge Broderick.
"And to the family we have made our divine James Wilkie, Loretta and Tabitha," she said, pausing as she became visibly choked with emotion while looking at her son. "Oh God, I love you so deeply and admire so much the people you are becoming, that every day at home and at work, I want to make you proud."
Celebrating a Career and Legacy
Earlier in her speech, Parker reflected on her parents' influence and her first role on Broadway. She also grew teary discussing her decades-long experience filming Sex and the City in New York City with her castmates, expressing gratitude for "25 years with the most glorious ensemble of women and actors."
The Carol Burnett Award is specifically designated to honour outstanding contributions to television. The Golden Eve special also celebrated actress Helen Mirren, who received the Cecil B. DeMille Award for film excellence. The ceremony aired on Thursday and remains available for streaming via platforms including DirecTV, Fubo, and Hulu+ Live TV.
Parker concluded her moving speech by walking over to her husband and sharing a kiss, cementing the evening as a significant personal and professional milestone for the star.
