Alexis Ohanian threw his complete backing behind wife Serena Williams as the tennis icon made her Centre Court comeback at Wimbledon in a straight-sets defeat to Maya Joint on Tuesday night.
Serena's Wimbledon Return
Williams made her surprise return to SW19 aged 44, four years after her previous appearance. Both her daughters accompanied her, though her youngest, Adira, was required to depart before play commenced owing to regulations governing the age of spectators.
The American's husband - whose net worth was estimated at approximately £113million as of 2024 - remained captivated by proceedings and posted a message on social media which supporters adored.
Ohanian's Touching Message
"We're so proud of you mama - cheering section," Alexis posted. His message featured two photographs - one of Serena on court and another of him with both daughters preparing for the action to begin.
Numerous supporters responded with their own words of encouragement. "What a joy that your girls get to see their mama, the G.O.A.T., in her element. Sending good luck wishes to you all!" one posted. "This is adorable" was the straightforward response from another.
Match Outcome
Williams was eliminated by Maya Joint, who earned her first victory since January. The Australian won 6-3, 6-7, 6-3.
While Adira was unable to spectate, Serena's elder daughter Olympia was permitted to witness the action as spectators must be five years old to remain. The age regulation also impacted Andy Murray in 2024. On that occasion, only two of his four children were permitted to watch him compete.
Atmosphere and Reaction
The crowd was in tremendous voice, particularly when the multiple former champion made her entrance. As the match progressed into its second set and the tension mounted, so too did the noise from those assembled beneath the roof.
Supporters were vocal in their backing for the seven-time former winner, whose youngest daughter had not even been born the last time she competed at Wimbledon. Indeed, both Olympia and Adira are closer in age to her 20-year-old opponent, Joint, than Williams herself is.
Serena's Comments
Speaking after the defeat, Serena said: "It was really great to be back at Wimbledon. I never expected to be here. The atmosphere was amazing. Walking out was amazing. I definitely relished it and missed it and enjoyed the moment more than anything."
Her husband, meanwhile, took to Instagram again and wrote: "Our little family is so proud of you @serenawilliams - even though it wasn't the outcome you wanted, you're an inspiration. We love you. @olympiaohanian @adiraohanian are also happy they got to stay up a bit past their bedtime."
