Britney Spears has voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility following her arrest for driving under the influence in March. The pop star was stopped by police in Ventura County, California, after driving erratically, and tests revealed drugs and alcohol in her system.
Her manager described her actions as 'completely inexcusable', adding that Spears intends to comply with the law and that this could be 'the first step in long overdue change'. A representative for the singer confirmed she has now begun treatment.
Spears, one of the most significant pop artists in US history, has largely stepped away from music. Her last album was released in 2016, and her most recent chart appearance was in 2022 with the Elton John collaboration 'Hold Me Closer'. In 2024 she stated she would never return to the music industry, preferring to ghostwrite for other artists.
In January she said she would never perform again in the US, though she hoped to perform in the UK and Australia. She sold her song catalogue in late 2025 to Primary Wave for a reported $200 million.
In 2023 she published the memoir 'The Woman in Me', which is being adapted for film by Wicked director Jon M Chu and La La Land producer Marc Platt. Spears was under a conservatorship from 2008 to 2021 following a mental health breakdown, which restricted her spending, diet and other aspects of her life.
