Irish actor Des Nealon, best known for his role in the 1983 Oscar-winning film Educating Rita alongside Michael Caine and Julie Walters, has died at the age of 90. He passed away in a hospice on Sunday, June 21, with no cause of death disclosed.
Career Spanning Six Decades
Nealon's career stretched over six decades, with a significant tenure at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, where he performed for more than 60 years. The Abbey Theatre confirmed his death in an Instagram post, describing him as "a true gentleman, gentle and generous in nature to all around him and ferociously good fun." His roles at the theatre extended from 1956 to 2018, a 62-year history with the National Theatre of Ireland.
According to the Abbey Theatre, Nealon was "chameleon like, faultlessly moving between classic plays and new works," portraying characters ranging from mathematicians to clergymen. The theatre paid tribute with a final ovation led by actor Andrew Bennett after a performance of The Whiteheaded Boy.
