GMB's Ed Balls Clashes With Royal Commentator Over Prince Harry Security Row
Ed Balls Clashes Over Prince Harry Security on GMB

A heated debate erupted on Good Morning Britain on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, as host Ed Balls clashed with royal commentator Afua Hagan over Prince Harry's security arrangements. The discussion, which also involved co-host Susanna Reid, prompted a flurry of viewer complaints about the show's focus on the Duke of Sussex.

Buckingham Palace Accommodation Offer Withdrawn

The row was triggered by Buckingham Palace's announcement that Prince Harry would not be staying at the palace during his London visit this week. A spokesman for Prince Harry said they recognised the offer had been "withdrawn," describing it as "disappointing." The Duke of Sussex is believed to be travelling without his wife, Meghan Markle, and their two children, following confirmation that the family would not receive publicly funded police protection.

Clash Over Security Assessment

Royal commentator Afua Hagan suggested that King Charles III had deliberately rescinded Harry's invitation, while former Royal Editor at The Sun Duncan Larcombe argued that Harry was responsible. Ed Balls disagreed with Hagan regarding the Home Office's rejection of Harry and Meghan's armed protection request.

"The security issue was worked out months ago," Ed observed. Hagan interjected: "No, no, Ed, I have to push back on that." Ed countered: "They've known that all along. That's not the reason for the debate in the last two days." Hagan strongly disagreed: "I'm going to have to push back on that one. RAVEC [Royal and VIP Executive Committee] have not done an updated risk assessment on the security that Prince Harry needs since 2019."

Ed responded: "The Home Office said yesterday that RAVEC assessed the risk... Are you saying that RAVEC aren't doing their job? Are you saying the Home Office is incompetent, they're happy to risk the security of Prince Harry?" Hagan replied: "I am saying that, and I will say that with my whole chest 10 toes down."

Ed Balls: 'Get a Grip'

Ed remained unconvinced: "Sorry Afua, RAVEC have done their job. You just don't like their conclusion," before adding: "I find that unbelievable." He wrapped up by stating: "I think [Harry] should tell his media people to get a grip."

Viewer Complaints Flood In

GMB audiences expressed frustration just minutes into the programme, with numerous viewers complaining about Prince Harry dominating the headlines. "#GMB is obsessed with Prince Harry," one person posted on X. Another wrote: "#GMB desperate to make a story out of nothing. Pathetic." A third remarked: "Give it a rest!" while someone else posted: "No one is interested." One viewer observed: "Who actually cares? The constant discussion about this is boring and getting ridiculous." Another shared similar views: "Is it a slow news day? Obviously a no news day."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am.
