Ellen DeGeneres has revealed she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, moved to rural Oxfordshire the day before the US election, prompted by fears over Donald Trump's presidency. Speaking at Cheltenham's Everyman theatre, DeGeneres told a crowd of 600 that they 'woke up to lots of texts from our friends and crying emojis' and decided to stay in the UK permanently.
The couple initially bought a part-time house but quickly decided they needed a different property, now selling the original stone farmhouse for £22.5 million. DeGeneres explained that the first house lacked sufficient stabling for de Rossi's horses, a necessity for the actor. The property includes a pool, helipad, and what E! News described as a 'party barn'.
DeGeneres cited threats to LGBTQ+ rights under Trump, including potential rollbacks of same-sex marriage protections, as a key reason for leaving the US. She stated the couple would remarry in Britain if necessary. However, critics note the ease with which wealthy individuals can relocate, contrasting with the struggles of undocumented immigrants facing deportation.
