New details have emerged about the secret midnight phone calls Elvis Presley made to his future wife Priscilla during their courtship in the late 1950s. According to accounts from Priscilla Presley's 1985 memoir 'Elvis and Me', the King of Rock and Roll would call her late at night from his army base in Germany, often whispering sweet nothings and discussing their future together.
The couple first met in 1959 at a party in Bad Nauheim, Germany, where Elvis was stationed with the US Army. Priscilla was just 14 years old at the time, while Elvis was 24. Despite the age gap, Elvis was immediately taken with her, and their relationship quickly deepened through these late-night conversations.
Priscilla has described how Elvis would call her after his shows or duties, sometimes talking for hours. 'He would call me at midnight, and we would talk until the early hours,' she recalled. 'He told me he loved me and wanted to be with me forever.' These calls were kept secret from her parents, who were initially wary of the relationship.
The midnight calls continued even after Elvis returned to the United States, with Priscilla often sneaking to the phone in her family home to speak with him. The couple eventually married in 1967, but their marriage ended in divorce in 1973. Despite the tumultuous relationship, Priscilla has always spoken fondly of those early days, calling them 'magical'.
The revelations come ahead of the release of Sofia Coppola's new film 'Priscilla', which tells the story from Priscilla's perspective. The film has reignited interest in the couple's unconventional courtship, which many now view as inappropriate given Priscilla's young age.
