Emmerdale Star Isabel Hodgins Addresses Future After Sudden Soap Exit
Isabel Hodgins, the actress behind Emmerdale's long-running character Victoria Sugden, has responded to fan concerns about her departure from the ITV soap, which aired this week. Hodgins, who has portrayed Victoria since 2006, made an abrupt exit in Thursday's episode after 32 years of the character being on screen.
Subtle Hint Points to Eventual Comeback
In a telling move, Hodgins liked a fan comment on her Instagram post asking if she would return to Emmerdale. This action is widely interpreted as a confirmation that her exit is not permanent, and she plans to reprise her role in the future. The actress did not provide a verbal statement, but the gesture speaks volumes about her intentions.
Maternity Leave Drives Exit Storyline
The exit coincides with Hodgins' real-life pregnancy and upcoming maternity leave. She confirmed in August 2025 that she and her husband, Adam Whitehead, are expecting their first child, with a due date in early 2026. Filming for her final scenes wrapped in December 2025, and she has stated she is due to give birth imminently.
In an interview with The Sun, Hodgins revealed that producers left the door open for her return, saying, "They told me it was up to me when I come back to the soap, which is lovely." She added, "I will be back in time but now it's time to be with my baby and Adam. We can't wait to be parents." This suggests a comeback is assured, though no specific timeline has been announced.
Dramatic Exit Plot Unfolds
Victoria's departure stems from a dramatic storyline where she accidentally killed her brother, John Sugden, in self-defense during the Corriedale crossover event in January. After attacking him with a syringe, not knowing its contents, she covered up the crime with help from her brother Robert Sugden and his partner, Aaron Dingle.
The plot thickened when villain Joe Tate uncovered video evidence of the incident, forcing the Sugdens to hand over their farm land and manipulating Robert to frame Moira Dingle. In her final scenes, Victoria told Robert she could no longer stay in the village due to the turmoil, but hinted at a return, mirroring Hodgins' real-life situation.
Emmerdale continues to air weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with fans eagerly awaiting Hodgins' eventual return to the iconic role.
